Latest addition to Level 4 is an unpretentious and unique shop that prides itself with handmade jewellery and self-designed apparels. Below is an interview with the designer and owner himself, known fondly as Iggi.
1. Why the name Coalition Store?
Coz it’s a coalition of labels, genres, cultures and products! It also represents the many alliances and friendships formed over the years between us and our designers, artists and of course, our customers! We wouldn’t be able to do what we love without any one of these groups of people. It also represents the interdependence of human beings, on one another and something bigger than ourselves.
2. Who designs the apparels and jewellery at Coalition Store?
For our in-house t-shirt label Culture Coalition, I conceptualise the designs, which are then executed by artists and designers from around Asia! Another t-shirt label we carry is Give Me Back My Sunday, whose range of light-hearted, fun-loving tees is conceptualised and designed by owner/designer-Eileen. As for the jewellery, they’re handmade by local designers, most of whom are doing this out of passion and interest while holding full-time 9 to 5 jobs as well.
3. Where does you guys get the inspiration from?
Culture Coalition is inspired by Asian Culture and is the work of Asian artists who possess the affection for the culture that springs forth from the soul of the people who toil for the very soil we stand on! Asian culture is in us and all around us, that’s where we get our inspiration from!
4. Who is the typical shopper at Coalition Store?
We have a pretty varied range due to our varied selection, but the most obvious lot are the fans of Culture Coalition who are in their mid-20s to late-30s who know what they want and don’t give a hoot about fickle fashion trends. Instead, they go for our tees which feature lots of Asian cultural icons which withstand the winds of change.
Other than our old faithful for our tees, we now see lots of trend loving ladies patronising our ladies’ range as well.
5. What’s the price range like in Coalition Store?
Accessories start at $9.90, ladies’ wear from $24-$40 and mens’ tees, caps and jeans range from $36.90 – $290. |
