Situated just next to HMV is iQ, the younger brother of the mass market leader Optical 88.  iQ is a hip zone catered for youths and the “twenty-somethings’, it targets specifically at style aficionados who are constantly on a fashion lookout.

Not only does iQ provide latest, fashionable products but also professional eye care services like that of its older brother, Optical 88.

Here’s a brief interview session with iQ’s representative:

What brands do iQ carry?
There’s too many recall! (Recalling offhand) We carry popular brands like Gucci, Dior, Oakley, Armani, Agnes b, Everlast, Rayban…
How does iQ segregate itself from the rest of the eye-wear chain in Orchard?
With the strong support back end through Optical 88, we are very strong in our service and back-up. We are able to source any model (if available by the agent) within our strong network and good relationship with our supplier.

Which designer is your best-seller?
Can't tell at this moment. But popular brands are definitely Gucci, Dior and Chanel.

How often can we expect new arrivals in the shop?
Every two to three months.

Metallic frame or plastic frame?
In general plastic frame is still in trend for sunglasses; for prescription, it's a fair mix but plastic frames are gaining more popularity for its diversity in colours and designs.

What’s the price range like?

Price range from $200 to $3000

Do share some current fashion tips on eye-wear.

(Laughs) I am no image consultant but there is a list of “rule of a thumb” I can share. The design of the frame is dependent on the shape of your face:

  • Small face - avoid frames which are too broad, though it's is trendy to wear ‘Jackie O’ glasses but the distance between the frame should not be too wide apart.

  • Square face - avoid square-shaped and small frames, whereas frames with round corners will help soften the jaw line.

  • Round face - choose elongated frames as it shapes the face better.

  • Heart shape – the lucky ones as frames of all shapes and designs tend to suit such face shapes.

  • The commonly used lenses are:

  • Polycarbonate - durable lightweight plastic

  • CR-39 - a plastic used mostly in prescription-grade lenses

  • Glass - durable but heavier to wear

  • Sunglass lens tints:
UV filtering is a common application on sunglass lenses, there are many others such as:

  • Gray lens tints - reduce brightness, do not distort color.

  • Brown and Amber tints - reduce glare but distort color more than gray tints.

  • Yellow lens tints - reduce haze from blue light better than browns, sharpen the view.

  • Green lens tints - reduce glare and help filter out some blue light, provides good contrast between objects.

  • Rose-coloured lens tints – is a good choice if you engage in outdoor activities as they provide good contrast for object view against blue or green backgrounds.
